Annamalaiyar Temple, where Lord Shiva is represented by the lingam, is situated at the foot of Annamalai hills in Thiruvannamalai, Tamil Nadu. It is connected with the five elements, the Pancha Bhoota Stalas, and exclusively the component of fire.
Ekambareswarar Temple, Kanchipuram
Ekambareswarar Temple in Kanchipuram is the largest one in the town of Kanchipuram and one of the five Pancha Bootha Sthalams - representing the element Earth. This is one of the most ancient temples in India having been in existence since at least 600 AD. It is famous for its tall gopuram or tower, built by the Vijayanagar King, Krishnadevaraya. It is said to be the tallest temple tower in India.
Jambukeswarar Temple, Tiruchirappalli
This temple is one of the five major Shiva Temples of Tamil Nadu, and represents the element of water. This was built by the Chola dynasty around 1800 years ago, and is decked with inscriptions dating back to the era. There are five enclosures inside the temple. Its external wall is enormous and extends to over a mile. It is 25 feet high and is more than two feet thick.
Meenakshi Amman Temple, Madurai
The huge temple complex is dedicated to Shiva and Parvati or Meenakshi. At the heart of the temple complex there are two sanctums for Shiva and Parvathy, bordered by many smaller temples and majestic pillared halls. The 12 temple towers here are a sight to behold. These have rock-hard granite bases, and are carved with figures of deities and other mythical animals, and painted in bright colours. This is a famous landmark and most visited tourist attraction in the city.
Thyagarajaswamy Temple, Tiruvarur
Thyagarajaswamy Temple is one of the ancient heritage sites of India. This is dedicated to Shiva, worshiped as Moolanathar, and is represented by the lingam. This is one of the largest in India and the gateway towers here, one of the tallest.
